Book review: Murder In The Jungle: A Mystery Hounder Adventure

Murder In The Jungle: A Mystery Hounder Adventure written by Sutapa Basu. This book can be quoted under the mystery and thriller mixed genre.

The title of the book is more or less enough for us to hint at its genre. The cover image, with its green color symbolizing the jungle, perfectly matches the plot of the book.

The protagonists of this story are all adolescents: Tara, Kabir, Vicky, and Ishi, who are friends and siblings attending the same boarding school. Though they are the main characters we also do have a few other important charcters in this story such as Kabir's parents, Nawab of Hunsur, the hamster of the teens, etc.

The story is set in the Nagarhole Tiger Reserve where, despite several surveillance cameras, tigers have gone missing. When these fabulous four visit the Nagarhole forest, they attempt to solve the mystery using their intelligence. This is the simple outline of the story. But the story reveals an even deeper mystery thriller within it. Now let me discuss my take on this book below.

I love the way how the author infused and portrayed Nawab's charcter in this book, he is the one who spikes the story's thriller element then and there. The brief introduction and the talents of each teen were given before entering the main plot, which really helps us to connect while reading the story.

Although the book centers around teens, I thoroughly enjoyed this light-hearted story with a simple thriller plot. Even adults looking for a lighter thriller read can surely give this book a try. The black and white diagrams presented between the stories, the font, and the way the story unfolds all gave me the nostalgic vibe of reading a storybook from my childhood.

The language presented in this book was so luxurious and it kind of elevated the reading experience. Having said that, if you are an extreme beginner in reading, you may struggle here and there while reading to understand certain words due to its rich vocabulary (let me make it clear again, this line is only for extreme beginners to beginners in reading). After reading some heavy books, this book acted as a palate cleanser for me and gave me the refreshment for my reading journey. Out of all, the sentence structure and the word choices presented in this book were my favorites, it really amp up the reading experience. The book started slowly, then picked up pace, but slowed down again in the middle. This inconsistency in pacing was the only downside I found in the story.

For Young adults and Teens, this will be the perfect engaging thriller. As an adult and avid reader, it took me two days to complete this book. A solid 4-star from my end.
