Blog : Why Books from the 1970s to the 1990s Hold a Special Place in My Heart

I am not someone who hates or is against new books. However, I love the authentic old books to read. The coffee-stained color of the golden pages, the old paper smell mixed with the naphthalene ball scent, the illustrations, the story flow—this list could go on forever.

Whether it’s a thriller, romance, horror, or any other genre published between the 1970s and 1990s, these books often feature simple, contemporary stories without modern technology or the internet. Stories published from the late 1980s onwards might include telephones, but they are often 'Rotary Dial Telephones' that dial slowly. Until all those six-digit numbers are typed, I can’t sit still and might hit the edge of my seat. Sometimes, I might scream inside, thinking, "Quick, he’s going to come!"

Yes, that’s the element I want in a story—rather than fast-chasing GPS, internet, tracking, phone recordings, and so on.

This is the book that was published in the year 1990

Now, you might ask about stories published by new authors with storylines set in the 1970s to 1990s. They’re good, and I like to read them too. However, I prefer the old copies for their authenticity and the narrative style from that time.

Now, you might ask about stories published by current authors with storylines set in the 1970s to 1990s.

You might also wonder about books that have been republished with the same content but on new paper. Here, the issue is the font size. I don’t know why, but even though the font in old copies was smaller, it felt easier and more comfortable to read (Refer to the given pictures). I don’t find that same comfort in the new prints.

These are the pages of 2005 published Novel

The illustrations are often missing in new books. Even when they are included, they are usually created by AI or computer-generated, rather than hand-painted or drawn as in older books. While the illustrations in old books might not always be perfectly proportioned, they add a unique touch to the reading experience. Try it yourself to see what I mean. Also, the paper quality was much more authentic with the old novel (again you can refer to the both the pictures).

Lastly, old copies carry a sense of history. Some books have library seals, while others have the year they were acquired written in ink. Reading books that have been cherished by family members offers a different, more personal experience.

Reading is a good habit and pls try to incorporate that into your daily routine as possible as you can. But try the old copies and old stories once, to get the new feel of reading.
