Book Review: I Want A Boy by Dr Aruna Kalra

Want A Boy written by Dr Aruna Kalra. This is an autobiography book with an enlightening and realistic topic as its central theme.

The cover image and title are more than enough to briefly explain the book's content. The picture and color choices on the book cover are perfect for the book's theme.

Let us be true to ourselves and answer the question: Do you prefer to have a boy or a girl baby? I am sure most of you will answer 'Boy'. Although we are living in a modern world with greater education and technological advancements, the obsession with having a boy has not faded yet. It is a default error that most of us were affected by. I would argue that due to the increasing rate of infertility, people are more accepting of any child regardless of gender. However, if you ask them their preference, I am confident that more than 75% would choose a boy over a girl.

In this book, the author, an experienced gynecologist, shares her personal experiences regarding the obsession with having a baby boy. Also, I found stories about many women from various family and financial backgrounds, with their struggles, pressures, and societal burdens during pregnancy discussed in detail. Beyond her role as a doctor, the author also addresses the societal burdens women face during pregnancy, particularly the expectation of having a boy baby. I was truly shocked after reading certain passages, and it made me think  'Are people so desperate to have a boy baby that they are willing to go to any lengths to achieve that?'. Even before starting to read this book, I knew it would be one that would stir and linger in my mind for a while, and as I expected, it did. Though it is an autobiography it didn't feel as such while reading as the book is filled with the real-life incident that happens in gynecologist life and the narration was so on point and lively to read. More than a book it will surely teach us some life lessons too once we close the read.
