Book Review: LIFE OF A 21ST-CENTURY MAN: LIFE IS NOT WHAT WE THINK by Ramesh Shiva
LIFE OF A 21ST-CENTURY MAN: LIFE IS NOT WHAT WE THINK written by Ramesh Shiva. This book falls under the contemporary fiction genre.
The title reflects the current timeframe we are living in, and the cover image resonates well with the book's content.
The main character and protagonist is Arjun, and the whole story revolves around him and his life. Arjun enjoyed a lavish childhood and became a boxer at the age of eighteen with the help of his master, Dyan. At the same age, he also lost his father. The sudden loss of his father made his life miserable—mentally, physically, and financially. In his early twenties, he falls in love with Yashodha, but shortly after, he faces pain, betrayal, and more. This story portrays the contemporary life of a 21st-century man, so do check this book if you are expecting a light read.
The book is quite large, with close to three hundred pages and ten chapters. It required a little break while reading, and it took me about five days to complete it. Most of the contemporary stories I read feature multiple characters in the spotlight, which can sometimes make the narrative feel overwhelming. However, I didn’t feel that way with this book, as it solely focuses on Arjun's life. The choice of words used by the author is easy to understand and feels very contemporary at the same time.
The story is good and well-planned, but the only aspect that detracted from the reading experience was the extremely elaborate narration, which sometimes felt a bit drawn-out. The language is simple and accessible; the sentence structure could be a bit more varied, but for a debut novel, I can accept it.
