Blog Post : The 90s snacks I loved tasting during my childhood
The term "90s life" is becoming more and more popular each day. It refers to the unique experiences of those who were born in the 90s or spent their childhood during that decade. Their lifestyle, games, food, and surroundings — everything is captured in the phrase "90s life."
There’s so much to say about the 90s that we could talk about it endlessly! But in this post, I’m going to focus on one unforgettable part of my 90s childhood — the snacks. While the list of snacks is long, I’ll be sharing five of the most affordable and memorable ones that I personally enjoyed.
1. Kayiru Mittai
Kayiru Mittai is a peppermint-flavored candy, usually white in color. The word 'Kayiru' means rope in Tamil, and 'Mittai' means candy. The candy is tied to a rope, making it fun to play with and eat — a true 2-in-1 treat! It was sold for just 25 to 50 paise, making it very affordable and known for its minty flavor. It was a popular mouth freshener for kids in the 90s.
2. Jelly Mittai
Jelly Mittai is a colorful, chewy candy similar to the gelatin treats we eat. It has a soft, gummy texture and is coated with a sugary, crystal-like layer that adds a sweet crunch. Usually shaped like small cubes or balls, it comes in various vibrant colors. Affordable and tasty, Jelly Mittai was a common treat found in small local shops and school canteens. It's one of those nostalgic snacks that instantly brings back childhood memories.
3. Orange Mittai
By now, everyone will know that Mittai means candy. Orange Mittai is an organic candy that has the shape of orange segments and smells orangy, but no, it was not made of orange; it is just made of sugar and some solids. It will come in two colours, orange and yellow. Also, if we eat more, it might feel sore on the upper inner mouth region. But still very affordable, and this was the birthday treat for the budget people.
4. Elantha Palam Jam
Elantha Palam Jam is a sweet and tangy jam made from jujube fruit. It has a unique blend of sour and sweet flavors, making it perfect to eat on its own or with snacks. Yes, you need to lick it to enjoy it, but it still tastes amazing! The jam’s thick, sticky texture and refreshing taste make it especially popular during the summer holiday season, although it’s available all year round. Affordable and often homemade, it’s a nostalgic treat that reminds many of childhood summers.
5. Cotton candy
Cotton candy is something I still see today, but it was available back then as well. Unlike now, it wasn’t sold in packets but was freshly made and offered on the spot. You had to fight with the air while eating it because it would shrink quickly after being exposed for more than a minute. It was a fun, sweet treat that made festivals and fairs even more special.
