Book Review : The Turning by Shannaaya Chopra.
The Turning is a fantasy fiction
book written by Shannaaya Chopra.
Let me be very frank, I am not much
of a pioneer when it comes to reading fantasy fiction novels. However, I wanted
to challenge myself and try this genre. When I got to know about this book and
since it revolves around young adult characters as the main lead, I felt it
would be the right fit for a beginner like me. Now let’s wrap up the prolonged
introduction of this book and let's get into the review.
About the Story:
As mentioned abov, this is a fantasy fiction novel with Kiara Sharma as the main lead. Kiara is a teenager who lives a normal life just like any other girl, with ordinary feelings and emotions, friends, family and daily routines.
When her life is going on normally
as a human everything changes on the night of her birthday. While spending time
with Krish and expecting something special, she instead receives something
unimaginable on that full moon night.
She turns into a blood-thirsty
werewolf herself. The even more shocking part is that she belongs to a rare
kind of werewolf who cannot control its powers once it got transforms as the
wild. When she turns back into her human form she is filled with regret over
her uncontrollable actions.
The story then takes a major twist
when Kiara learns that not only her but even her friend is a werewolf but with
one who can control his emotions and powers even in human form. Then comes the
introduction of Ordenia, a secret city near Mumbai where werewolves live
peacefully… or do they?
The story moves forward by exploring
how Ordenia is attacked, who protects it and how Kiara plays a role despite her
overwhelming powers. The rest of the story revolves around these questions.
My View on the Book:
The story is narrated in a simple
and easy style which makes the reading experience comfortable even for a
non-fantasy reader like me. The plot is not entirely new or extremely
nail-biting, but it is a familiar story told with gripping and engaging
narration.
I really loved the images and
sketches included in the book. They gave me a Hollywood movie vibe and also
helped in visualizing the chapters better.
Although the storyline is familiar,
it is not completely predictable. I was also happy that the author chose
familiar Indian names for most of the characters, as the unusual names in many
fantasy novels often confuse me while reading. This book definitely gets a
“yay” from me for that reason.
This book not only gave me a fantasy
movie-like reading experience but also felt like an adventurous journey. After
the story crosses the halfway mark it continues at the same pace with gripping
twists. Not just fantasy lovers but readers who enjoy contemporary, adventurous
or mystery stories can also give this book a try.
