Book Review : Kiss Me Like You Mean It by Laura Wood
Title - Kiss Me Like You Mean It 🍁
Author - Laura Wood 🍁
I have always been a rom-com lover but for some reason I haven't picked up a book in this genre since the beginning of 2026. I didn't want the year to end without reading at least one more romantic comedy. When I came across Kiss Me Like You Mean It by Laura Wood both the title and the autumn-themed cover caught my attention. So, I decided to pick it up as my next read.
The story follows Ophelia Turner-Jones also known as Lee, a reserved woman who likes to have control over her life. She has been in love with Nico for years who happens to be her older brother Jack's best friend. However, she has never expressed her true feelings to him. Nico on the other hand is quite the opposite of Lee. He loves adventure, travelling and living life as a wandering soul.
Now comes the actual twist in the story. Somehow on one drunken night Lee and Nico accidentally get married in Las Vegas. After that night they lose touch with each other. A year later an email from the wedding chapel confirms that their marriage is legally still valid. Lee is shocked to learn about the legal marriage and then she sets out to find Nico and discovers him living in a small town called Roseport. But there are plenty of surprises waiting for her including an eight year old girl.
From there the story follows their lives in Roseport and the complications that arise from their unexpected marriage. What happens when Lee finally meets Nico again? Will she tell him about their marriage? And what will happen when they have to deal with a situation neither of them ever expected? forms the rest of the story.
I have to say that this book is not just about love or the unusual situation the main characters find themselves in. Once Lee and Nico meet again in Roseport the story also becomes about their individual lives and the changes they experience. Lee's inner transformation especially after she starts interacting with the people in the small town was refreshing to read about. I actually enjoyed reading their conversation with the people of Roseport. Nico's personal growth was equally enjoyable.
Usually romance novels show us how two people with opposite personalities attract each other and eventually learn to accept one another as they are. But what I particularly liked about this story was how it showed that sometimes, personal growth and change are also necessary for a successful relationship.
Let me tell you something, this is not the kind of book that will give you an adrenaline rush or keep you on the edge of your seat with unexpected twists. It is a simple small-town romance read that we might have been familiar with. I found it difficult to stay engaged throughout and needed multiple sittings and plenty of breaks to get through it. Although the story is simple and familiar I felt it could have been more engaging.
Overall, this was a one-time read for me.
