Blog: My childhood Sundays and Idlis

As a person who was born a Millennial, I can proudly say that I have the best childhood memories compared to other generations of people. Let me explain why, we are the generation who tasted both technology and traditional based lifestyle at the same time. So I can say, I am a proud 'Millennial'.

Oh, wait! Wait! this post is not about the Millennial, it is about the staple Sunday food of my childhood weekends.

Yes!!!! from the title you would have guessed it right, it is 'Idly'. As a South Indian from Tamil Nadu, if I didn't have an 'Idly' at the weekend, then it was considered a sin (not really I am exaggerating it, a bit). Those Sundays were purely nostalgic.

Idlis are small round shaped rice cakes, it is prepared by steaming method and no oil is needed to make them. The batter for Idlis is prepared by grinding rice and Urad Dal at 4 is to 1 proportion. Once we grind it to the perfect batter, we need to allow it to ferment for one whole night. The right fermentation will provide us a soft and perfect savory idlis.

After a wonderful refreshing head bath with open and air-drying hair, I will be waiting for hot and soft idlis in front of the TV, on the dining room floor. Once you take the idilis out of the cooker, you can not remove it right away from its plate, if you do so it will break and can lose its shape. Trust me, waiting for idilis with the empty plate was painful, but that waiting was worthwhile.

At 8.50 AM, watching Ramayana in 'Doordarshan' and popping a piece of hot idlis with the coconut chutney was pure heaven. The idlis will be the same every weekend but the side dishes will change alternatively. Sometimes it will be coconut chutney, sometimes Onion or tomato chutney, If we have a guest then it will be spicy hot chicken gravy.

Last but not least, idlis are not only tasty but also healthy for the gut, due to their probiotic content. So, if you haven't please try it for yourself and comment on your favorite childhood Sunday food. See you soon......

  1. Wow! I love idlis too, very healthy option for breakfast or dinner, I can have it at any time. My Sunday breakfast also included Idli, Chakuli (A variant of Plain Dosa), Uttapam, Upma, Alu paratha, puri prepared by my mother. I am a big fan of South Indian breakfast although I belong to Eastern part of India ; Odisha.

  2. Beautiful memory... I too like eating Idli from time to time. They are a healthy breakfast and four Idlis could keep you full for a long time. When i was in Mumbai i used to have them regularly in breakfast once i reached my office premises. I'm from Uttarakhand so that was when i got truly introduced to Idli otherwise i'd not eaten it that much.
