Victims for Sale by Nish Amarnath
In her crime-thriller fiction, Victims for Sale, author Nish Amarnath has dealt with a very bold theme that brings out the urgent need for societies to tackle a horrendous social evil that is being perpetrated on vulnerable and hapless sections of the society. This book is the best nail biting thriller that has been written in recent times!
About the story:
And the story is told in the voice of a woman journalist, Sandy Raman, the protagonist, who decides to tread new territories in the aftermath of a personal tragedy in her home country. She lands in the house of the Sawants in London as a paying guest to pursue a master’s programme in the London School of Economics. Victims for Sale chronicles the life of Sandy and the unusual happenings she witnesses in the Sawant household that send red flags and perk up her instincts to find out what is happening. The book vividly brings out a student’s life in London and the travails she undergoes trying to acclimatize to a different culture. Survival for this young woman is at stake even as she is propelled from one disaster to another. But her curiosity, a brilliant mind and a sensitive nature urge her to launch into an undercover operation in her effort to save mentally challenged women and little children.
My review:
The author has done her research well and has written a page-turner, from the point of view of a journalist. What I like best about the book is the fact that not only does the author keep the interest of the reader alive till the last page, but she has also woven a meaningful plot into a thriller and has explored the depths of the psyche of the main characters as well as the antagonist. It is a well- researched, well-presented and fast-paced thriller that has a humanistic angle to the plot.
More than anything else, this thriller is different as it as a strong message and highlights the trauma and helplessness of differently-abled individuals in societies where predators exploit them. It also delves into the psyche of those with sinister motives in an effort to rake up understanding about their non-conformist and warped ways of thinking as well as acting in a manner as to perpetrate social evils.
Nish Amarnath pulls off the climax very well and the reader is astounded by the intricate plot and the irony at the end of the book. This author has me hooked to her style of writing and plot construction. I am already looking forward to more books from this eloquent author.
I like:
1. The front wrapper design which is unique, compelling and elicits an element of suspense.
2. The fast moving pace.
3. The intriguing story content.
Victims for Sale is a thriller that will keep your engrossed till you finish the book. A very good read for those who enjoy page-turning crime thrillers!
