Blog - The ghost/abandoned town of India

Did you guys just like a movie, In reality, there was a town in South India that was abandoned and called a 'Ghost Town' now. It is not named as such due to some spooky or haunted story but after the horrifying flood. If you are not aware of the same and wanted to know about the same please read further.

When I visited Rameshwaram there was a tour guide who asked us to visit the ghost town of India known as Dhanushkodi. I was shocked by hearing the name "The Ghost Town" and was interested in visiting there and as a whole family, we decided to visit there. The place  Dhanushkodi is located on Rameshwaram Island, Tamil Nadu (Yes Tamil Nadu has an Island).

The History of Dhanushkodi is quite big and also painful. Dhanushkodi was an active seaside town until 1964 Rameswaram cyclone hit and ruined it badly. This cyclone killed close to 2000 lives.

Did you know that until 1964 Dhanushkodi had a Railway station, Church, School, Harbour and so many other places just like any other town. But that one cyclone totally collapsed the entire town and it derailed the train that was on the run to reach the Dhanushkodi Railway station.  115 People who traveled on that train were dead.

Till  1964 Dhanushkodi also had an immigration office because the Dhanushkodi harbor sails the transport from Sri Lanka to India. The harbor, immigration office, and even the railway tracks collapsed completely and the town was declared unfit for living and named as the ghost town by the Indian govt.

At Present we can see only the collapsed railway tracks, a demolished church, and a school. Many travelers visit this place now as the govt reconstrcuted the roads and allows tourists to visit till 5 p.m Bikers and road travelers visit this place either at Sunset or Sunrise.

Morning Sunrise is so special in this place because this place connects both the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean. Both these sea and ocean can be distinguished easily by their color. The place which govt newly constructed is known as "Arichal Munai".

Still, the origins of that place visits that place daily in their private van to sell, fruits, cooked fishes, and decorative sea shells. There is no power or any facility available in Dhanushkodi town now. After the sunset, the entire town will be covered with his abandonment and dark due to its past tragedy.
